Hobbit Books

Post by Huitzil on Wed Nov 21, 2012 10:15 am

Because Kate just gave me the idea, I thought it would be fun if we all posted pictures of the covers of our Hobbit books, along with when we first read them / last time we read it / how many times!!

It would be nice to see all the cool images, and the different languages!

This is what mine looks like. I first read it for school when I was about 8, and I only actually read it for a second time about 6 months ago!

i moved it to Other Versions of Hobbit where there was a thread for the book. just replaced it. that's a good idea.

i have seen so many covers in stores and on the internet but i personally love mine the most, the Smaug looks so vicious there. here's mine:

Re: Hobbit Books

Post by Pure-Maiden7 on Sun Nov 25, 2012 1:39 pm

My review of The Hobbit:

My favourite types of stories are adventure and fantasy so this book fit me very well and Its a joy to read every time!

This book is my favourite story! About the least likely adventurous person (Bilbo Baggins-a Hobbit- who enjoys a quiet life musing through books and maps) triumphing on a dangerous, surreal, mysterious and inspiring adventure with 13 dwarves, run by the dwarf King Thorin Oakenshield.

This story fills me with peace, joy, laughter, puzzlement (from riddles), amazement, fun, mystery, gives me a burning spirit of adventure and imagination and at times even fills me with sorrow.

*SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW*

The start of the book is very light hearted and fun as the young Hobbit Bilbo Baggins is unexpectedly invited to join on an adventure by the mysterious but very wise wizard, Gandalf the Grey. On that Wednesday evening, an unexpected knock on the door was heard, along with many unexpected visitors (the dwarves) inviting him on a very unexpected journey and was given the role as burglar (I think you get the jist of how unexpected it was for Bilbo).
The challenges that follow are full of travel, trolls, bravery, camaraderie, epic battle, strange and beautiful locations and ferocious goblins ans wargs.
As the scene of events happens, Bilbo found the ring of power from the strange Gollum creature's cave and managed to get himself and the dwarves out of many mucky situations-from which the dwarves gained new found respect for Bilbo. I dont want to give too much away but the ending involves triumph, drama, battle, much sorrow cry then peace and joy hug.

This is certainly the type of book I'd write and love reading! Tolkien greatly inspires me and I'd love to one day write a legend like this!

In general out of 10 I give this book 10 but due to certain circumstances (the 'much sorrow' parts) I give the book a 9.

Obviously this is just a mini review of this masterpiece because I dont want to give too much away since many are new to it and the movie is yet to come out! (I'd rather do a full review of the movie so I'll do so when the first one comes out!)

i love the review though i don't think this is well said:

Bilbo achieves the ring of power from the strange Gollum

since Gollum didn't give it to Bilbo nor lost it, Bilbo just found it before he even met Gollum

Re: Hobbit Books

Post by Scarthia Buthergia on Sat Jan 12, 2013 10:33 pm

I have two copies of Hobbit, one in Czech and one in English. I like the cover of the Czech one a lot (as I do love what is between the covers, especially the many drawings). It's a hardcover and my dad read it to me every night before going to sleep when I was little. I read it again at school (under the desk, though) and since then numerous times. Unfortunately, my younger sister lost it but I hope I'll get the same copy for my birthday (that's what she promised to me). It looks like this:

The English copy is older, it's my dad's and he got it from my aunt 40 years ago (that's what he told me). I'm re-reading this one mostly because it's easier to carry around in my handbag. It's the same copy Peter Jackson has :) Or it looks very very similar to the one I saw him holding on the set.
I'd love to have a least one of the copies signed at HobbitCon ;)

The english cover:

Yes, I love my books. My bookcase is overflowing with books and I don't even have all of them there (some are still left at my parents' house). I tend to re-read a lot of my books, so that makes my english Hobbit paperback book look pretty shabby.

This is the first version that was read to me when I was 5, its the only "authorized" Canadian print (at that time anyway)

I actually have two copies of this cover (anyone want to trade for one LOL) which I think someone mentioned that it is the same cover as the one being used on the set of the movie

Just got this for Christmas

this is the copy I bought for my daughter, she's only 9 months but she'll (Probably) get it eventually.
