NB the runes above are the anglo saxon versions. These were originally used in the hobbit book (and still are on Thorin's map) but PJ seems to be using Cirth (the LOTR version of the runes) for all the dwarf writing in these films.

these are the Cirth runes: Cirth wiki

I tried to learn Tengwar quenya when I was 12, but I've never been very good at languages, so I just built my own script based on it and used some of the shapes I liked, I think it was called 'Littlewick' after a common near where I live, ahh, childhood memories brought back by the hobbit / LOTR :)

But you do now, and you're very good at it! I always admire people who can speak multiple languages because I've never been able to do it, it seems like a mystery to me!!

I normally learn a few useful phrases when I travel anywher, at least so I can be polite, but I always forget them!

I did research I Costa Rica for a month, and the only person in the whole place who spoke any english was the german vet (who could also speak, italian, russian, spanish and french - and she's a vet - she was amazing!) but despite that, and listening to tapes for months I still barely picked up any spanish!!!!

Yeah, I think its either Spanish or Mandarin maybe? I made a genuine effort to learn Spanish, and I could read stuff okay because they asked me to translate some leaflets back into english, but I just couldn't pick it up when it was spoken apart from simple stuff! They do speak very fast though, which didn't help with my slow brain, also as I was in Latin America it wasn't quite the same as the European Spanish!

I need to start trying to learn some Japanese again as we're going out there again next year!

I always found the tengwar alphabet in the appendices of LOTR but I found in the back of the 9th volume of the histories of middle earth that Tolkien created a different alphabet that is easier to learn AFTER the LOTR was published. I've been using it to write my journal for 8 years.
